Louis Crompton: LGBTQA+ Advocate

Louis Crompton joined the English department faculty at UNL in 1955. While at UNL in fall 1970, Crompton taught the first interdisciplinary gay studies class in the nation. Later that same year, he became the advisor for the first UNL LGBTQA+ student group, the Gay Action Group. Crompton co-founded the Gay and Lesbian Caucus of the Modern Language Association in 1974. Dr. Crompton was a pioneer of gay studies, widely recognized for his scholarship, and a strong advocate at UNL until his retirement in 1989.
